Just a quick question : Would it be possible to port fenix to DOS. As in MS-DOS or FreeDOS? Perhaps the DJGPP-project could do it. It includes GCC among other things : http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/

What would be the reason for such a seemingly fruitless effort? Hardly any machines in common use DOS, unless they are dumb terminals or light-weight servers, and then why would you play Fenix games on them?

Quoting Imerion: Would it be possible to port fenix to DOS. Everything is possible, although I certainly wouldn't bother the DJGPP-project with it. Why not use DIV Games Studio 2 on MS-DOS? Fenix is based on DIV Games Studio, in case you didn't know. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

While the reasons might seem silly, I had two things in mind: The first was to create a simple game console out of an old computer and a modified keyboard. I have already started coding a GUI which would launch other games and programs. (Written in Fenix, since that is the language I know best.) The reason to use FreeDOS is simply because it's extremely small and fast. The other option would be to load Linux, but that takes much more time, processing power and memory. Not to mention the fact that I would have to load X or something similiar to use graphics at all. The other reason is simply that I use FreeDOS on my laptop, and it would be nice to be able to code on it as well. I have used the latest version of Fenix, so I doubt I could use DIV anymore. Not to mention that DIV is closed source and out of service since long. I doubt I could even find it. Perhaps the question should be, would it be possible to port Fenix to DOS without rewriting it's code? While I can set up a GCC-dev environment, I can't modify the Fenix source, so it would have to compile "as is". ____________ Try my games : http://gamejolt.com/profile/imerion/5288 |

Quote: would it be possible to port Fenix to DOS without rewriting it's code? I doubt it... Fenix uses SDL, I guess it depends whether SDL has been ported to DOS. Hmm, a quick google search of "SDL for DOS" brings up this: http://www.japheth.de/HX.html Looks quite interesting. [Edited on January 19, 2008 by DTM] ____________ :o |
